Nathan and I now have our Thanksgiving plans all worked out. We'll be joining my brother Alvin and his family in Utah. I'm excited to go back home, and some of the family will be meeting Nathan for the first time!
Subbing - Work has started to pick up. Oh, how I love those 5:00AM wake-up calls. This last week I was a junior high social studies teacher and a high school chemistry teacher. Being in a chemistry classroom reconfirmed the importance of having "highly qualified" teachers. I was no real help to the students since all I could remember from high school chemistry is that we made ice cream...Another very interesting part of this week was subbing for my old junior high school. As I walked to the main office memories came flooding back to me. I didn't remember where certain classrooms were but as soon as I saw the inside of the building I knew not much had changed. A dark peach beige color still plagues the hallways. It was strange to see some of my old teachers. It was really cool to see my friend Nicole's art still hanging in the library. I've got more days of subbing lined up and I hope to stay busy now that I'm on 3 district lists.
Usborne Books
I had a very successful event a couple of weekends ago. I got $200 in free books! It's very fun watching my inventory grow. Even though business is growing a lot slower than I would like I'm still glad to be making progress. I made a great contact with a school and I hope to do a book fair there. The school is private, which generally means parents really support fundraisers and book fairs. My fingers are crossed. This could be the big break I've been waiting for. I'm also working on a grant for an underfunded school in Seattle. It will be very rewarding if I can get a deserving school the books they really need. There are a couple non-profits I'm in contact with also. Everything is moving slowly, but every little step forward is progress.
